Step 1: IT Load
IT Load (kW) = Number of Racks × Average kW per Rack
This is your useful power — the electricity that actually reaches servers, storage, and network equipment. For our default scenario: 20 racks × 7 kW = 140 kW.
The "average kW per rack" is where most people get it wrong. They use the rated capacity of their PDUs (often 8–10 kW for a typical 30A 208V circuit) instead of the actual metered draw. Industry data from the Uptime Institute consistently shows that average rack utilization is 40–60% of rated capacity. If your racks are rated for 10 kW each but you haven't measured the actual draw, start with 5–6 kW as your assumption.
Step 2: Total Facility Load
Facility Load (kW) = IT Load × PUE
PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) captures everything your facility consumes beyond the IT equipment: cooling systems, UPS conversion losses, power distribution losses, lighting, security, fire suppression. A PUE of 1.5 means for every 1 kW of IT load, your facility draws 1.5 kW total — that extra 0.5 kW is overhead.
For our example: 140 kW × 1.5 = 210 kW total facility draw. That 70 kW of overhead is real money — roughly $613,200 per year at $0.10/kWh.
Step 3: Monthly Energy Consumption
Monthly kWh = Facility Load (kW) × 730 hours
Why 730? That's the average hours in a month (8,760 hours/year ÷ 12). Data centers run 24/7/365, so there's no off-peak period to reduce this number — unlike office buildings or manufacturing plants. Our example: 210 kW × 730 = 153,300 kWh/month.
Step 4: Monthly and Annual Cost

Straightforward multiplication, but the rate deserves scrutiny. The US commercial average is roughly $0.10/kWh, but data center rates vary enormously by region:

Step 5: CO₂ Emissions
CO₂ (tons/yr) = Facility Load (kW) × 8,760 hrs × 0.39 kg CO₂/kWh ÷ 1,000
The 0.39 kg CO₂/kWh factor is the US national average grid emission intensity from the EPA's eGRID database. It accounts for the current US generation mix (~40% natural gas, ~20% coal, ~20% nuclear, ~20% renewables). Your actual emissions depend on your regional grid mix — a facility in Washington State (mostly hydro) has roughly one-tenth the carbon intensity of one in West Virginia (mostly coal).
Our 20-rack example: 210 kW × 8,760 × 0.39 ÷ 1,000 = 717 tons CO₂/year. That's equivalent to roughly 155 passenger cars driven for a year.
Average Power Consumption by Data Center Size

The key takeaway: power costs scale linearly with capacity but the cost per kW drops with scale because larger facilities achieve better PUE through more efficient cooling plants, better utilization, and purpose-built infrastructure.
Rack Power Density Trends: 5 kW to 50+ kW
Rack density is the most volatile variable in the calculator. It's also the one changing fastest — and it's being driven almost entirely by AI and GPU workloads.
Traditional IT (5 – 8 kW per rack)
Standard 1U/2U servers, network switches, storage arrays. This has been the norm for 15+ years and still represents the majority of deployed racks globally. A typical enterprise rack with 10–15 servers, a ToR switch, and a patch panel draws 4–7 kW. Air cooling handles this density without breaking a sweat — ASHRAE's A1 envelope (18–27°C inlet) with standard CRAC units is sufficient.
High-Performance Compute (10 – 20 kW per rack)
Dense compute clusters, high-frequency trading rigs, blade chassis deployments. This is where you start needing containment (hot or cold aisle) and more precise airflow management. Blanking panels become mandatory, not optional. Some facilities need in-row cooling units or rear-door heat exchangers at the high end of this range.
AI / GPU Racks (30 – 50+ kW per rack)
This is the density that's breaking traditional data centers. A single NVIDIA DGX H100 system draws around 10.2 kW. Stack four in a rack and you're at 40+ kW before adding networking. The next-generation NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 rack is specced at 120 kW per rack — that's more power than a small data center from a decade ago, in a single 42U cabinet.
At these densities, air cooling is physically insufficient. The math doesn't work: you'd need airflow velocities that would blow the doors off the rack. Liquid cooling — direct-to-chip, rear-door heat exchangers, or full immersion — becomes the only viable option. If your facility wasn't built for liquid cooling, retrofitting it for AI workloads means significant capital expenditure: new piping, CDUs (Coolant Distribution Units), raised floor modifications, and potentially structural reinforcement for the additional weight.
Design your power infrastructure for the highest density you'll need in the next 5 years, but deploy cooling for what you need today. Power infrastructure (transformers, switchgear, busbars) is expensive and disruptive to upgrade. Cooling can be added incrementally — supplemental in-row units, rear-door HX, or targeted liquid cooling — without ripping out the floor.
Hidden Power Costs Most Operators Miss
PUE captures overhead as a ratio, but most operators don't know where their overhead actually goes. Here's the breakdown for a typical PUE 1.5 facility, based on metering data we've collected across dozens of deployments:
Cooling: 55 – 65% of overhead
Chillers, CRACs/CRAHs, pumps, cooling towers, condensers. This is always the biggest slice. A chiller plant operates at roughly 0.6 – 1.2 kW per ton of cooling depending on age, type (centrifugal vs. scroll vs. screw), and operating conditions. At partial load, efficiency often degrades — a chiller at 30% load can be 40% less efficient per ton than the same chiller at 80% load.
UPS Losses: 10 – 15% of overhead
No UPS is 100% efficient. Modern double-conversion UPS systems hit 96 – 97% efficiency at optimal load (40–80% of rated capacity). But at light load (below 25%), efficiency can drop to 90–92%. In a 2N configuration, each UPS runs at roughly 50% of rated capacity — which is below the optimal efficiency curve. Those losses are pure heat that your cooling system then has to remove, compounding the cost.
Power Distribution: 5 – 10% of overhead
Transformers, PDUs, static transfer switches, busway, cabling. Each step in the power chain has a small loss — typically 1–3% per stage. A facility with utility transformer → main switchgear → UPS → PDU → rack PDU has five conversion/distribution stages. Even at 98% efficiency per stage, the cumulative loss is 1 – 0.98⁵ = 9.6%. That's real power that appears on your utility bill but never reaches a server.
Lighting, Security, and Misc: 3 – 8% of overhead
LED lighting (on 24/7 in most facilities), security systems, fire suppression monitoring, BMS controllers, office space HVAC, generator block heaters and battery chargers. Individually small, collectively significant. We've seen facilities where the lighting alone consumed 15 kW — and nobody noticed because it was "just the lights."
Generator Standby Losses: 1 – 3% of overhead
Diesel generators consume power even when they're not running: block heaters keep the engine warm for fast start, battery chargers maintain starter batteries, fuel polishing systems run on schedule, and control panels draw continuous power. For a 2 MW generator, expect 5 – 15 kW of continuous standby draw. Multiply that by your redundancy configuration (N+1 or 2N) and it adds up.
How to Reduce Your Data Center Power Bill
In order of effort vs. impact. Start at the top and work down.
1. Containment (ROI: 3 – 6 months)
Hot aisle or cold aisle containment prevents the mixing of supply and return air. Without containment, 20–30% of your cooling capacity is wasted on recirculation — cold air that never reaches server inlets, hot exhaust that short-circuits back to the cold aisle. Containment alone typically drops PUE by 0.1 – 0.2.
Cold aisle containment is easier to retrofit (roof panels over the cold aisle, end-of-row doors). Hot aisle containment is more effective but requires ducting hot exhaust back to CRAC return plenums. Either is dramatically better than open aisles.
2. Raise Supply Air Temperature (ROI: Immediate)
ASHRAE's A1 envelope allows server inlet temperatures up to 27°C (80.6°F). Many facilities still target 18–20°C (64–68°F) supply air because "that's how we've always done it." Every degree Celsius you raise the supply temperature reduces chiller energy by roughly 2–4%. Going from 18°C to 25°C can reduce cooling energy by 15–25%. This is free money — it just requires updating setpoints and verifying thermal compliance.
3. Blanking Panels (ROI: Weeks)
Every empty rack unit without a blanking panel is a bypass airflow path. Hot exhaust air recirculates through empty U-spaces back to server inlets, forcing CRAC units to work harder. A $2 blanking panel can save $50+/year in cooling energy per open U-space. For a 20-rack deployment with 30% open U-spaces, that's roughly 250 open U-spaces × $50 = $12,500/year in wasted cooling. Install blanking panels in every open rack unit, no exceptions.
4. Variable Speed Drives on Cooling Infrastructure (ROI: 1 – 2 years)
CRAC/CRAH fans, chilled water pumps, and cooling tower fans that run at full speed regardless of load are burning energy you don't need. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) allow motors to ramp down when cooling demand drops. The fan affinity law is your friend here: power consumption scales with the cube of fan speed. Running a fan at 80% speed uses only 51% of the power. At 60% speed, 21.6% of the power. VFDs on cooling plant motors typically deliver a 20–40% reduction in cooling energy.
5. Economizer Hours (ROI: 1 – 3 years)
When outside air temperature (or wet-bulb temperature for water-side economizers) is below your return air temperature, you can cool for free — no compressor needed. In northern US climates, air-side economizers can provide 3,000 – 5,000 free cooling hours per year. That's 34–57% of the year where your chillers can be off or at minimal load. Even in moderate climates (mid-Atlantic), 1,500–2,500 economizer hours are achievable.
6. Right-Size Your UPS (ROI: 3 – 5 years)
An oversized UPS running at 20% load is dramatically less efficient than a right-sized UPS at 60% load. If your IT load has grown (or not grown as planned), evaluate whether your UPS configuration still makes sense. Modular UPS systems allow you to add or remove power modules to match actual load, keeping efficiency in the sweet spot. Some modern UPS units offer eco-mode (line-interactive) that achieves 99%+ efficiency — though the 4–10ms transfer time on utility failure makes some operators nervous.
Putting It All Together: A Real-World Example
Let's walk through a complete power cost analysis for a 50-rack colocation deployment being planned for a Tier III facility in Ashburn, Virginia.
